Ajla Aksamija

Perkins+ Will

On 21st Sept 2017, Ajla Aksamija, the building technology researcher/associate at Perkins+Will and assistant professor from University of Massachusetts Amherst, gave a presentation of Design Method for Sustainable, High-Performance Building Facades. Now we share the presentation video (English presentation + Chinese subtitles).

Ajla Aksamija

PhD, LEED AP BD+C, Building Technology Researcher/Associate at Perkins+Will

and Assistant Professor, University of Massachusetts Amherst

Dr. Ajla Aksamija is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Architecture, University of Massachusetts Amherst and Building Technology Researcher/Associate at Perkins+Will. Her research expertise includes building science and sustainable design, emerging building technologies and digital design. She directed Perkins+Will’s Building Technology Laboratory (“Tech Lab”), one of the first practice-driven research laboratories focusing on advanced building technologies, high-performance buildings, computational design, and building facades. Dr. Aksamija has contributed to several books and has published over seventy research articles. She is the author of two books, Sustainable Facades: Design Methods for High-Performance Building Envelopes (John Wiley & Sons, 2013) and Integrating Innovation in Architecture: Design, Methods and Technology for Progressive Practice and Research (John Wiley & Sons, 2016). Dr. Aksamija is the founder and editor of the Perkins+Will Research Journal.

Abstract

This presentation covers methods for designing sustainable,high-performance facades, and the necessary steps in ensuring that the environmental factors and energy-efficiency strategies are integrated with the design process. The facade is one of the most significant contributors to the energy budget and the comfort parameters of any building. High-performance facades need to block adverse external environmental effects and maintain internal comfort conditions with minimum energy consumption, and the location and climate become one of the crucial factors in selecting appropriate design strategies.
