On 20th Sept 2017, Philip Enquist, the urban design and planning partner from SOM, gave a presentation of Challenges facing China’s Cities in the 21st Century. Now we share the presentation video (English presentation + Chinese subtitles).

Philip Enquist

FAIA, Urban Design and Planning Partner, SOM

Philip Enquist is leader of the global City Design Practice of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM), one of the world’s most highly awarded urban planning group. Phil and the City Design Practice have improved the quality and efficiency of city living on five continents by creating location-unique strategic designs that integrate nature and urban density within a framework of future-focused public infrastructure. The scale of Phil’s design perspective continues to expand from innovating sustainable urban forms that enhance city living with walkable, transit-enabled districts humanized by their natural amenities to rapidly changing urban clusters within regional ecosystems like North America’s Great Lakes basin and China’s Bohai Rim.

Abstract

Based on SOM’s global experience, this talk defines the development goal of future city as carbon balanced, more livable, and response to the challenges of climate change and becoming better cities. In line with these goals, Phil analyzes the challenges of the future development of Chinese cities and proposes the corresponding strategies for urban planning and design.
